Seminoles Top Clemson in Doubleheader

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Clemson Volleyball team fell to Florida State in a pair of matchups in Tully Gym on Saturday. The Seminoles, who played just four matches in the fall of 2020, returned to the court for the first time since Oct. 16 and improved to 2-3 both overall and in ACC play, while Clemson fell to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in ACC contests.

Upon the conclusion of Saturday’s doubleheader, Clemson freshman outside hitter Camryn Hannah has led the Tigers in kills in their last four matches. Hannah combined for 30 kills on the day, including 20 in the Tigers’ opening match.

Coming off a dominant 21-kill, 22-dig performance against North Florida on Friday, Hannah led the Tigers’ offense with a 20-kill effort against the Seminoles in match one.

Starting the first set of the match with a 4-0 run, the Tigers surged to a 1-0 advantage in a 25-19 fashion without surrendering the lead throughout. Junior right side hitter Solei Thomas posted seven of her 14 kills and hit .771 in game No. 1 of Saturday’s opening match.

In a highly-contested second set, which featured three tied scores and three lead changes, the Seminoles were able to pull away to tie the match, 1-1, after winning the second, 25-19. FSU then won the final two games, 25-15.

Claiming sets two, three, and four, Florida State’s defense was the difference maker in stifling the Tigers’ offensive charge as Taryn Knuth recorded 16 of the Seminoles’ 20 blocks in the opening match in addition to a .700 hitting percentage.

Florida State secured a six-point lead, 12-6, early in the first. The Tigers would cut the deficit to as little as three points, 22-19, later in the game, but it was too much to overcome as the Seminoles won the opening set, 25-22.

In the second, the Seminoles once again seized upon another 6-3 lead, but this time FSU kept its foot on the gas, registering points on nine of the last 10 plays to close out the game, 25-14.

The Seminoles wasted no time coming out of the break as they jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. From there, it was all FSU, which scored six of the last seven points of Saturday’s second match to win the third, 12-25, and match.

Up next, Clemson hosts UNCW on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Both matches are slated to stream on ACCNX.
