Clemson Travels to Wake Forest & Virginia Tech This Week

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s soccer team is set to travel to Winston-Salem to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. After Thursday’s match, the team will head north to Blacksburg, Va. for a Sunday match against the Hokies of Virginia Tech that is set to kickoff at 1 p.m at Thompson Field.

Clemson Notes:

• The Tigers are coming off a hard-fought battle against No. 11 Duke on Saturday, Oct. 13 at home, where they fell 3-2 on Senior Night.
• Sophomore Mariana Speckmaier and redshirt senior Miranda Weslake each netted their seventh goals of the season, Speckmaier’s coming in the ninth minute to give Clemson a 1-0 lead while Weslake’s came in the 66^th minute to tie the match at 2-all.
• Weslake, Sam Staab and Ellen Colborn capped off their Senior Night and final regular season home match in style, as each recorded points in the contest.
• Staab tallied her eighth assist of the season, the 30^thof her career, and remains fifth in the Clemson record book in that category. Colborn recorded her first career assist in the match.
• Weslake and Speckmaier are tied for the team lead in goals and in overall scoring, each with 7 and 15 respectively.
• Last week, junior goalkeeper Sandy MacIver earned ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after earning a pair of shutout road wins at No. 10 Florida State and Pitt.
• MacIver is 7-4-0 on the season with six shutouts. She has 28 saves in 1,009 minutes in net for Clemson, a goals against average of .800 and a save percentage of .757.
• The Winsford, England native missed the first four matches of the season as she was in France, where she represented England’s women’s national team and earned a bronze medal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
• Staab was the only collegiate player called up to the U.S. U23 Women’s National Team for the 2018 Nordic Tournament that took place from Aug. 29-Sept. 3. The San Diego, Calif. native scored the team’s game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over Norway to secure the USA’s first-place finish.

 

Wake Forest Notes:

• The Demon Deacons handed No. 11 Boston College its only loss of the 2018 season on Sept. 27, defeating them 2-1 in overtime.
• Wake Forest enters Thursday’s match having lost its last four matches, with four of the last five matches against top 17 teams.
• Redshirt sophomore Estelle Laurier and senior midfielder Bayley Feist lead the team in scoring with four goals each. Laurier also leads the team in assists (5) and points (13.)
• Senior goalkeeper Nonie Frishette is 6-7-1 with four shutouts, two of which are against top ranked teams No. 4 Penn State and No. 16 NC State. She has a 1.46 goals against average with 65 saves and a .756 save percentage in her 1,298 minutes this season.

Series Notes:

• Clemson has a 15-9-4 record all-time against Wake Forest, with the series dating back to the 1994 inaugural season of the program.
• The Tigers are 6-4-2 against the Demon Deacons at Spry Stadium.
• Clemson is unbeaten in the last four meetings with Wake Forest, claiming back-to-back 2-1 wins, including last year at Historic Riggs Field.

Virginia Tech Notes:

• Virginia Tech is set to square off with Notre Dame on Thursday, Oct. 18 before playing host to the Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 21.
• The Hokies enter Thursday’s match 3-4-0 in conference play, with a 1-0 upset win over instate rival No. 6 Virginia on Sept. 27.
• Freshman forward Karlie Johnson is leading the offense with five goals for 10 points.
• Junior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn is 7-5-3 in her 1,410 minutes in net for Virginia Tech, allowing 14 goals for a goals against average of .89 and a save percentage of .791.

Series Notes:

• Virginia Tech has a 5-4-4 record all-time against the Tigers, with the series dating back to 2004.
• The last regular season meeting between the two teams was a 3-0 shutout Clemson victory on Oct. 8, 2017 at Historic Riggs Field. Weslake netted the game winning goal in the 55^th minute for her second goal of the season.
• The last time the two teams met at Thompson Field, the match ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw on Oct. 1, 2016.
