Clemson To Compete in Nicklaus Match Play

Clemson, SC—Larry Penley’s Clemson golf team will compete in a match play tournament for the first time in 12 years when the Tigers participate in the Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Clemson is one of eight teams competing in the event that will be played at the site of the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament. The Tigers will be joined by Florida State, Stanford, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Ken State and host Ohio State.

Each team will play three matches over October 8-9. The Tigers open with Ohio State on Monday.

Each team will have six players competing in each match. The Tigers lineup will include Bryson Nimmer, Turk Pettit, William Nottingham, Kyle Cottam, Zack Gordon and Coleman Self.

Nimmer is the leader of the team so far this year with a 67.33 stroke average. The senior from Bluffton, SC won the Carpet Classic and the Maui Jim Intercollegiate and finished second by one shot at the Nike Collegiate.

Turk Pettit is coming off a 12 th place finish at the Nike Collegiate, including a pair of rounds in the 60s. Nottingham has the most success among Clemson players in the lineup in match play. He won the 2017 North-South Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2. Kyle Cottam, Zack Gordon and Coleman Self are coming off top 25 performances at the Hummingbird Invitational.

This will be Clemson’s eighth time Clemson has played in a regular season match play tournament. While Clemson has never won a match play tournament, the Tigers have finished second three times and third once. This will be Clemson’s first match play tournament since 2006.
