MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Former Clemson women’s tennis player Julie Coin won her opening-round match in a Grand Slam tournament for the second straight event, as she posted a three-set win at the Australian Open earlier this week.
Coin, listed at #93 in the current Sony Ericcson WTA Tour rankings, defeated Russia’s Elena Vesnina in the first round. The Tiger standout from 2002-05 won the first set by a 6-4 margin, while Vesnina evened the match with an identical 6-4 decision in the second set. Coin then dropped just one game in the third to advance to the next round.
The native of Amiens, France has now won a match in both her career Grand Slam appearances, as she reached the third round after her historic upset at the 2008 US Open last August. Coin knocked off world #1 Ana Ivanovic in the second round after advancing through the qualifying tournament for a spot in the main draw.
However, Coin’s run at the Australian Open ended in the second round as she fell to #21 Anabel Medina Garriques of Spain, 6-1, 6-4.
