RALEIGH, NC – Jamie Pulgar defeated the Tigers’ Yannick Maden at number-one singles in clinching the match and leading N.C. State to a 4-3 win over Clemson in a men’s Atlantic Coast Conference tennis match at Raleigh, NC Sunday afternoon.
N.C. State, ranked 42nd nationally by the ITA improves to 19-8 overall and 5-6 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 9-13 overall, 5-6 in league play. Both teams will participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on April 19-22, in Cary, NC.
After N.C. State won the doubles point, Clemson won the next three singles matches. Clemson’s Gerardo Meza defeated Dominic Hodgson 6-1, 6-4 at the number-two slot to even the team score, 1-1. The Tigers’ Zachary Rigsby defeated Dave Thomson 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 at number-six singles. Dominique Maden defeated Austin Powell of N.C. State in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
From this point, N.C. State rallied and won the next three matches. Robbie Mudge defeated Clemson’s Hunter Harrington 6-3, 6-4 at number five singles. Julian Sullivan of N.C. State won over Ayrton Wibowo at number three singles 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7).
With the match tied, Pulgar was victorious over Yannick Maden at the number-one singles contest, claiming the team victory for the Wolfpack.
Pairings for the ACC Championships will be set on Monday.
