Middlebrooks Shines on Senior Day; Clemson Falls to Syracuse

Clemson, S.C. — The Clemson women’s tennis team (7-13, 1-9 ACC) lost a hard fought match to Syracuse (6-8, 5-6 ACC) on Senior Day. Prior to the match, seniors Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Laura Marti, as well as team manager Anna Mudry were honored for their contributions to the program. 

The Tigers dropped the doubles point, but battled to win three singles matches before the No. 15 ranked Vicktoriya Kanapatskaya clinched the match for the Orange on Court 1. 

While Syracuse ultimately won the doubles point, Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Jenna Thompson beat the No. 28 ranked doubles team for their first-ever ranked win. In singles play, Middlebrooks continued her impressive Senior Day performance with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory on Court 5 to even up the score. 

Cristina Mayorova and Sophia Hatton won their matches on Courts 2 and 3, respectively, to give Clemson a 3-1 lead, but the Orange battled back to secure the win and improve to 3-4 all time against the Tigers. 

Of Note:

  • Jenna Thompson and Mackenzy Middlebrooks earned their first ranked doubles win over the No. 28 ranked pair of Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Natalie Novotna
  • Sophia Hatton returned to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 28, and picked up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory
  • The Tigers fall to 4-3 all-time against Syracuse

Up Next:

Clemson will travel to Notre Dame and Louisville next weekend for two ACC matchups. First serve in South Bend is set for 3pm on Friday, and first serve in Louisville is slated for noon on Sunday.
