Men’s Hoops Falls to ACC Rival N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Justin Gainey scored a career-high 28 points and Kenny Inge added 23 to lead North Carolina State to an 84-71 win over Clemson on Saturday.

The Wolfpack (15-8, 5-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) won a second straight conference game for the first time this season and sent the Tigers to their seventh league loss in their last eight games.

Terrell McIntyre led Clemson with 20 points and Harold Jamison added 11, nine of them in the second half.

The Wolfpack finished the first half with a 9-0 run to put Clemson down 48-29 at halftime.

Adam Harrington buried a 3-pointer in the first minute of the second half to give the Wolfpack its biggest lead of the game at 51-31.

Clemson (13-10, 2-8) steadily chipped away at the lead and McIntyre trimmed the deficit to nine at 67-58 on two free throws with 5:24 left.

Gainey made four free throws over the minute and Anthony Grundy hooked up with Inge on their second alley-oop of the game to maintain State’s double-digit lead with 4:07 remaining.

N.C. State sank 13 of its final 14 free throws to keep Clemson at bay down the stretch.

Gainey scored 16 points on 6 of 6 shooting and Inge added 14 in the first half for N.C. State.
