Men’s Golfer Byrd Finishes Walker Cup Action

Sept. 12, 1999

NAIRN, Scotland – Clemson All-American Jonathan Byrd finished with a 1-1 singles record for the United States team in the 37th Walker Cup over the weekend in Nairn, Scotland. Byrd, a rising senior at Clemson, is the third Clemson player in history to play in the prestigious Walker Cup.

On Saturday, Byrd defeated David Patrick of Great Britain/Ireland 6 and 5. His victory margin was the largest by a United States player in the entire event. On Sunday, Byrd dropped a singles match to Graeme Storm of Great Britain/Ireland, 1 up.

Byrd played one match in the alternate shot format with teammate Steve Scott of Florida. Scott and Byrd lost to Paul Casey and Luke Donald of Great Britain/Ireland, 5 and 3.

The Great Britain/Ireland team won 10 of 12 matches on Sunday to take the event 15-9.

Byrd will return to Clemson this week and will return to his number-one position in the Tiger lineup next week when Clemson travels to the Ping/Preview at Auburn, AL, the site of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
