Men’s 1999-2000 Basketball Schedule Announced

Aug. 5, 1999

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson will play 16 games at Littlejohn Coliseum, including non-conference games with South Carolina and George Washington in a week’s period, according to its men’s basketball schedule released by the Atlantic Coast Conference Thursday afternoon. The Tigers, under second-year coach Larry Shyatt, also have a non-conference road game at Penn State on December 1 as part of the first ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Clemson opens the final season of the century against East Tennessee State on Friday night, November 19 at 7:30 PM. The contest will be the Friday evening before the Clemson vs. South Carolina football game, which will be in Columbia this year. The Tigers will then play host to Wofford on the 21st, a 4:00 PM Sunday afternoon tilt.

Clemson will take part in the SoCon Holiday Hoops at the BiLo Center in Greenville over Thanksgiving weekend. The Tigers open with Central Florida and will meet either Old Dominion or Wisconsin-Green Bay in the second round. Mississippi, Furman, South Carolina State and Oregon State round out the eight-team field.

Clemson will have two high profile non-conference home games within a seven day period December 16-22. Arch rival South Carolina will be in town on December 16 for a 9:00 PM game that will be televised live by Fox SportSouth. Clemson has defeated the Gamecocks five straight years. George Washington and veteran coach Tom Penders will come to Clemson for a December 22nd contest.

Clemson will face Furman in the BiLo Center on Decmeber 30 at 6:00 PM. That means Clemson will play four games in the second-year-old BiLo Center this year. The ACC schedule opens January 6 at North Carolina, the second straight year Clemson has opened its ACC schedule at North Carolina. Clemson’s first home ACC game will be January 9th against Wake Forest, a club that beat Clemson twice last year.

All but two of Clemson’s ACC games will be shown on some type of television. The home finale will be March 1 against Duke in a game that will be televised by ESPN.

“We have always said that we like to have balance in our schedule,” said Clemson Head Coach Larry Shyatt. “We will have balance in terms of games in Littlejohn (16) and away from Littlejohn (14). Four of our first six games will be away from Littlejohn Coliseum. We also have balance in that we will be competing against some of the larger leagues. In our non-conference schedule we will face teams from the SEC, the Big Ten and the Atlantic 10. We could also face another SEC team or a Pac 10 team in the BiLo Classic.

“Playing South Carolina and George Washington certainly adds to a our schedule in Littlejohn Coliseum. Next year Seton Hall will come to Clemson. I like the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Playing at Penn State will give us the opportunity to play in a hostile environment prior to ACC play. “

Shyatt will face this schedule with a young team. Only five of the players on the roster have played in a college game for the Tigers and only one of those is a returning starter, Andrius Jurkunas. Clemson is the only team in the ACC with just one returning starter.
