CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson’s Terrell McIntyre was named the top player and Georgia Tech’s Tony Akins was cited as the top rookie for play through the first week of the ACC basketball season. The announcement was the result of balloting by the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association.
McIntyre paced Clemson to three wins in seven days with an ACC best 22.7 scoring average. The senior from Raeford, NC hit 58 percent from the field, 59 percent on three-point shots (10-17) and 84 percent (21-24) from the line in the three games combined. He had five three-pointers in a victory over Western Carolina and became Clemson’s career three-point goal leader in the process. He also had 13 assists and seven steals. He had 25 points in a victory over Western Carolina and 27 in a season opening triumph over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Akins, a rookie from Lilburn, GA, averaged 21.5 points, nine assists and 5.5 rebounds in Tech’s victories over Charleston Southern and The Citadel. He had 20 points, nine assists and four rebounds against Charleston Southern. He came back with 23 points, nine assists and seven rebouinds against The Citadel. He made 6-12 three-point shots in that game.
