Mamona Finishes Eighth at European Track & Field Championships

Aug. 2, 2010

CLEMSON, SC – Reigning NCAA outdoor triple jump champion Patricia Mamona finished eighth in the event at the European Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Barcelona, Spain. It put an end to a strong summer for Mamona, who was a two-time All-American and third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American this season for the Tigers.

Mamona put together a personal best in the qualification round on Thursday. She jumped 46’4″ on her third and final preliminary attempt to reach the finals. On Saturday, she came out of the gate with an impressive opening jump of 46’2″. The mark stood as her best among six attempts, and she stood strong with an eighth-place effort.

“Patricia had a wonderful showing at the European Championships,” said Lawrence Johnson, Clemson’s Director of Track & Field. “She performed well against a strong international field and continues to get better and better. We look for big things out of her as a red-shirt senior during the 2011 outdoor season.”

The native of Portugal won the NCAA outdoor championship in June, the eighth individual event national title for the Clemson women’s track & field program. She was also the NCAA indoor runner-up in the event, as well as ACC indoor and outdoor runner-up in 2010.

Mamona has one outdoor season of eligibility remaining.
