EUGENE, Ore. – Clemson junior middle-distance runner John Lewis and senior 400-meter hurdler Deron Gordon earned Second Team All-American honors Wednesday at the 2018 NCAA Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. Lewis captures his second All-American distinction of the season in the men’s 800m event, while Gordon nabs the honor in his final meet as a Tiger.
Lewis started out in lane No. 3 in the third and final section of the men’s 800m race. He crossed the finish line at the 1:49.40 mark to place sixth in his heat, which was good for 15th overall. Lewis posted one of the most complete seasons by an 800m runner in Clemson history having earned All-American accolades in both indoor and outdoor competition, and claimed First Team All-ACC status in the 800m indoors and outdoors as well. He also set the program record in the 800m indoors at the 2018 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Gordon closed out his Clemson career in Wednesday’s 400m hurdles semifinal. Gordon, like Lewis, lined up in the third lane, but in heat No. 2. It took Gordon 52.05 seconds to complete one lap around the Hayward Field 400-meter track, which was good seventh in his heat and 16th overall. In addition to his All-American distinction, Gordon goes down at No. 6 all-time in Clemson history in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.28 seconds, which he achieved two weeks ago at the 2018 NCAA East Prelims meet. For his career, Gordon earned All-ACC status twice, including at this year’s 2018 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The men’s 4x400m relay consisting Deonte Tolbert, Cordell Lamb, Nate Gordon and Jeffrey Green placed eighth in the second heat. A botched handoff on the final lap slowed the Tigers down as the group turned in a time of 3:16.47.
The top-16 finishers in each event are guaranteed Second Team All-American honors, while the top-8 finishers earn First Team accolades.
