RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore Marie-Alexandre Leduc upset the 55th-ranked singles player in the nation, but the Clemson women’s tennis team fell to No. 26 NC State on Friday afternoon by a score of 6-1 in Raleigh, N.C. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 8-9 (3-5 ACC), while the Wolfpack improved to 15-7 (4-5 ACC).
Fernanda Navarro and Daniela Ruiz opened doubles play with a 6-2 win over their NC State opponent at No. 3. It was the fourth win in a row, and eighth in the last nine matches, for the duo. The Wolfpack’s 21st-ranked doubles team of Martina Frantova and Anna Rogers downed the Tigers’ top team of Leduc and Ayan Broomfield, ranked 50th nationally, and NC State went on to win 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to claim the team point.
In singles play, the Wolfpack won at No. 6 to take a 2-0 lead, before Leduc, currently unranked, recorded the 6-4, 6-4 upset over 55th-ranked Frantova at No. 1 singles. Leduc’s win was her sixth in a row, and her second straight at the No. 1 singles position. NC State then won at No. 5 and No. 4 singles, in that order, to clinch the win.
The road only gets more difficult for the Tigers, who now travel to Durham, N.C. to face No. 17 Duke on Sunday at 12 p.m.
