CLEMSON, SC — Lady Tiger freshman Rachel Gallegos scored three goals and dished out two assists as Clemson proved too much for the Lady Bulldogs of UNC Asheville, winning 9-0 tonight in women’s intercollegiate soccer action at Historic Riggs Field.

Clemson opens the season 1-0 for the fifth season in a row while UNC Asheville drops to 0-1.

It was a night of first for many Lady Tigers as four freshmen scored the first points of their young careers. Gallegos scored the first two goals of the season and the first two goals of her Lady Tiger career in the first six minutes of the game. With just 1:59 gone from the clock, Gallegos stole a misclear from a Lady Bulldog and rocketed a shot from about 18 yards out passed UNC Asheville goalkeeper Mary Elizabeth Scherger. She would later add the third goal of her hat trick when Leigh Clark sent a cross to the far post where Gallegos finished it into the back of the net. Her eight points tie her for the record in points scored in a single match. Current Lady Tiger senior Jenny Crawford was the last to total eight points in a game when she did it versus South Carolina in October of 1997.

Freshmen Heather Beem and Deliah Arrington also contributed to Clemson’s scoring. Beem was assisted by Gallegos with about six minutes left in the second half and Arrington finished out the scoring with a goal at the 72:10 mark. Audria Lyons, another freshman, also netted two assists for the Lady Tigers.

Clemson will be in action again this weekend, when they will play host to William & Mary this Sunday at Historic Riggs Field. Start time for the game is set for 2:00 p.m..
