La Grutta Signs with Clemson Golf Program

Clemson, S.C. – Matias La Grutta, one of the top amateur golfers in the state of North Carolina, has signed a national letter-of-intent with the Clemson men’s golf program.  Head Coach Larry Penley made the announcement on Thursday, the second day high school prospects can sign a letter of intent with an institution.

La Grutta is currently a senior at Panther Creek High School in Cary, NC and is ranked number 57th in the nation in the class of 2020 by the AJGA.  He is rated as the 22nd best player in North Carolina by North Carolina Junior Golf Association.   He is the first native of Argentina to sign with the Clemson program.

As a junior, La Grutta finished seventh at the 4A Mideast Regional in the state of North Carolina, then finished 16th at the State 4A Tournament.

A highlight of La Grutta’s Junior Golf season this year was earning medalist honors at the Judie Oppenheimer Memorial where he shot a 213 for 54 holes after rounds of 70-73-70.      He finished fifth out of 159 golfers at the CGA Junior Boys championship July 23-25, 2019.

La Grutta also had top 10s at the Rome Junior Classic where his 210 score was good enough for seventh, and a 10th place at the AJGA Wyndham Qualifier where he had a season best 67.

In 2018, La Grutta finished fifth at the Judie Oppenheimer with a 214 score, was eighth at the Amino Junior Championship with a 219 score, and was ninth at the Rome Junior Classic with a 210 score.  He had a 65 in the second round that was his career best in a junior event.

La Grutta will be the second member of his family to attend Clemson.  His brother, Nicholas, is a junior engineering major at Clemson.
