Kosgei Secures First, Tigers Complete adidas XC Challenge

CARY, N.C. – For the second consecutive meet, the Clemson women’s cross country team earned the top three times with sophomore Judy Kosgei securing first place in the women’s 5k. The women tabbed a second place overall team finish and the men placed fifth overall in the men’s 6k in the adidas XC Challenge on Friday at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

“Another strong performance on the women’s side with our 1-2-3 punch-Judy, Silvia and Gladys,” Head Coach Vicky Pounds said. “They continue to impress as do the rest of the ladies with their progression forward. Sawyer Dagan had a great day with a collegiate third place finish.”

For the second time this season, the Clemson women secured first, second and third place as the first three athletes to cross the line were all Tigers. Kosgei completed the 5k with a time of 16:11.1 as she tabbed first place overall in the event, which marked her first, first-place finish for the Tigers this season.

Shortly following Kosgei was freshman Silvia Jelelgo who finished the event with a time of 16:17.6 to secure second place. Rounding out the top three was Gladys Chepngetich as she tabbed third place with a time of 16:24.2.

This is the second meet-in-a-row where Kosgei, Jelelgo and Chepngetich have secured the top three times.

In the men’s 6k, Dagan was the first Tiger to cross the line as his time of 17.44.7 was the fourth fastest time overall but third fastest collegiate time.

Up next, the Tigers will head to Louisville, Ky. to compete in the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday, October 5. For all the most up-to-date information regarding Clemson cross country, visit ClemsonTigers.com and follow @ClemsonTrackXC on Twitter and Instagram.
