Running back Kevin McNeal has been a member of the Tiger team for four years and has undoubtedly enjoyed every second of his experience. He made the decision to walk on to the team in 2021, and he has credited the decision as one that has changed his life.
Before running down the Hill, McNeal played running back throughout his days at Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Academy, where he learned about his position while improving his skills to prepare himself to play at the next level. He joined as a walk-on in 2021 and made his in-game debut the same year against South Carolina State. McNeal described the experience of walking on as unforgettable.
“Walking on to the team was crazy since my dad played on scholarship at Alabama, so it was hard for me because I thought I would get a scholarship. When I saw Clemson and had that opportunity, I wanted to be someone who adds to the team in some type of way, and I have been able to do that here.”
Clemson has provided some lifelong memories for players, and that includes McNeal, as he met his best friend, Carter Shipley, after a game during his sophomore season and also experienced his first road game this year.
“That was a big deal for me because I hadn’t traveled anywhere or made a travel team in my four years here. When I saw my name on the list, I was ecstatic.”
His father, Kareem, who played on the offensive line for Alabama before suffering a tragic off-the-field accident, and mother have been a huge part of his support system at every level of his life.
“My dad is in a wheelchair and is still one of the happiest people I’ve ever met and seen. He has a smile on his face and is always trying to put joy in other people’s lives. That’s something I’ve always admired and look up to, because he has never given up.”
McNeal’s mother has also been an inspiration.
“My mom has been a rock for my family, and she has sacrificed a lot for our family. She has been there more times for me than I can count.”
McNeal’s family has instilled hard-working values in him, which he has carried into his work both on and off the field. He also credited Ana, a special person in his life, for his success.
“She has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and towards being a better man. She has shined a light on my life.”
The middle level education major knows the importance of both educating himself and others.
“I chose Clemson because of the education program, but originally I wanted to go into Spanish. I came here not just for sports, but for school.”
With aspirations to continue with his degree and teach after college, he is certainly making strides, as he is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member. When asked how he manages to balance school and athletics, he acknowledged the commitment and dedication that has been required of him to be a student, teacher and athlete all at once.
“It’s been something that’s been tough, but I’ve had to change things in my lifestyle and the way that I was living. At the same time, it all comes down to wanting to actually do it.”
In his free time, McNeal enjoys hanging out with his friends, cooking and listening to, writing and playing music.
“I love playing piano and recreating songs and creating music.
“Fishing is another thing I enjoy. It’s a peaceful place and allows me to be one with nature. It’s just you, the ride, the wind, the grass around you, the water in front of you and the fish in the water, and it’s such a peaceful time.”
McNeal has stayed true to himself throughout his life.
“You are you and no one else, because your life is not someone else’s life.”
