Joana Costa Captures Brazilian National Championship

June 17, 2004

Former Lady Tiger standout Joana Costa captured the Brazilian National Championship in the pole vault at the 2004 national meet. Costa, a native of Sao Paolo, Brazil, set the championship meet record en route to her first national title with a clearance of 13’3.5″/4.05m.

While at Clemson, Costa made Lady Tiger history as a senior as the only Clemson women’s pole vaulter to compete at the NCAA Championships. She completed her career ranked second on the Lady Tigers’ all-time vaulting list with a best mark of 12’10.25″. That mark was set at the 2003 East Region Championships, where Costa placed second in the meet. She was the 2000 ACC Indoor Champion in the pole vault, and earned all-conference honors outdoor in 2000 and in 2003.
