CLEMSON, S.C. — Hunter Tyson (Monroe, N.C./Piedmont) is one of 60 men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, who excel both on and off the court, to be selected as a candidate for the 2021-22 Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Tyson has been an outstanding representative of Clemson and the basketball program in his time in Tigertown. He carries a 3.5 GPA and has earned NABC Honors Court recognition, as well as being a two-time All-ACC Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Team selection. In addition, Tyson has been named to the Clemson’s President’s List once and Dean’s List twice.
On the court, Tyson has continued to excel and improve on the court, enjoying a career season as a junior. He shot career-bests from the floor (46.5), three (43.1) and the free throw line (77.1). This season, he is averaging a career-best 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while upping his shooting percentage to 48.0 and free throw percentage to 82.6.
Out of the classroom and off the court, Tyson has taken part in a multitude of community service initiatives, including: Habitat for Humanity, visiting the Greenville Children’s Hospital, Tiger Wonderland (working with Clemson Community Care and providing gifts to underprivileged children in the area) and working with Outdoor Dream Foundation, which aims to bond the basketball program with children and youth under 21 who have been diagnosed with a terminal or life-threatening illness.
The men’s and women’s candidates will be narrowed to two fields of ten finalists later in the season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will then select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 20222 NCAA Men’s Final Four and NCAA Women’s Final Four this spring.
