Aug. 3, 1999

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson head women’s track and field coach Ralph White announced today the hiring of Jackie Hoover as the Tigers’ new assistant coach. Hoover comes to Clemson from the College of New Jersey, where she has been an assistant coach the past two seasons.

“We’re very excited to have Jackie joining our program,” said White. “She comes from a very fine program at New Jersey. This will be a good fit for our program, and she will be able to hit the ground running in the next few weeks. As one of my former athletes, Jackie knows what is expected of her and will bring a great deal of expertise that will help us get to the level where we want to be. She will be a good role model for our young women.”

While at New Jersey, Hoover was responsible for assisting the head coach with all aspects of both the men’s and women’s programs. She has coached numerous All-Americans in both cross country and track and field. Hoover’s responsibilities included designing strength and conditioning programs, directing recruiting, monitoring academic progress of athletes, managing home meets for the Lions and serving as site manager for the NJAC 1998 Cross Country Championships. She assisted with the Lions’ summer track camp, where she coached high school jumpers.

Hoover was a four-year letterwinner on the track and field team at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA from 1994-97, where White served as head coach from 1987-96. Hoover was a four-time NCAA Division III automatic qualifier in the heptathlon and was chosen the North Coast Athletic Conference Outstanding Women’s Field Athlete of the Year in 1997 after winning the conference title in the indoor high jump. The team captain as a junior and senior, she set Allegheny records in the heptathlon, pentathlon, pole vault, 55m hurdles and 100m hurdles.

Besides her track experience, Hoover also has experience in gymnastics. She has coached at the Schafer’s School of Gymnastics in Lawrenceville, NJ, for the past two years, where she has helped four gymnasts to the state finals and has produced one state champion. Hoover coached gymnastics in Fayetteville, GA, during the summer of 1996, while also working at the Olympic Games and volunteering at the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. She was an international gymnastics coach in Tokyo, Japan, during the summer of 1995.

A native of Toledo, OH, Hoover is a 1997 graduate of Allegheny with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in Russian. She was a scholar athlete three consecutive years and was a student athlete mentor and a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Hoover completed her masters degree in physical education from the College of New Jersey in May 1999.
