Hammonds Competes at NBA Orlando Summer League; Mays to Play in Las Vegas

July 11, 2008

Cliff Hammonds, who graduated from Clemson in May after a fine four-year career with the men’s basketball program, completed play Friday with the Orlando Magic in the NBA Summer League in Orlando, FL. James Mays, also a senior on the 2007-08 team, will begin play Saturday in the Las Vegas Summer League with his home state Charlotte Bobcats. Both are hopeful of securing contracts as undrafted free agents.

Hammonds, a third-team All-ACC selection as a senior, averaged 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while playing in three of the five games for the Magic this week. He played exclusively at the point guard position and led the Magic to a 2-1 record in the games he was competing.

His best game was against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. The Cairo, GA native posted 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals in the contest. He earned a starting assignment for Friday’s game against the Miami Heat, where he contributed four points and helped limit opposing point guard Mario Chalmers to 3-of-9 shooting. As efficient as ever, Hammonds finished the three-game stretch with just three turnovers in 72 minutes of action.

Mays, who was second-team All-ACC Tournament after an injury-plagued senior season, will be one of 17 players on the Bobcats roster for the five-game schedule. Charlotte’s first game will be Saturday, July 12 at 6:00 PM (EST) against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Bobcats will also play July 13, 15, 18, and 19. The games will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of UNLV.
