ATLANTA – After winning the opening game, the Clemson Volleyball team dropped three straight sets to Georgia Tech (19-8, 12-4), 25-21, 23-25, 10-25, 14-25), in O’Keefe Gymnasium Friday evening. Clemson was led by right side hitter Solei Thomas, who registered a team-high 14 kills and four block assists.
The first was close throughout and featured six lead changes. Clemson trailed 20-21 before tallying five straight points to close out the set and a 1-0 lead. Thomas registered five of her 14 kills in game No. 1 on 11 swings and just one error. Middle blocker Ava Pritchard also gave the Tigers a nice boost early on offense as she totaled three of her nine kills within Clemson’s first five points of the match.
The Yellow Jackets led by as many as many as five (20-15) in game No. 2, but Clemson cut the Georgia Tech lead to just one, 23-22, later in the set. A Clemson attack error, which was eventually followed by a GT kill, gave the Yellow Jackets set and evened the match heading into the break.
Then, Georgia Tech jumped out to a 9-1 lead to open the third with the help of five Tiger errors. The Yellow Jackets held Clemson to just five kills for the set and sided-out on all 10 Tiger serves for the set.
Georgia Tech finessed two unanswered runs – one 5-0 and one 4-0 – in the middle of the fourth to help the Yellow Jackets secure the victory and improve to 12-4 in ACC play and 12-1 on the season in O’Keefe Gymnasium.
Georgia Tech’s Mariana Brambilla (20 kills) and Julia Bergmann (15 kills) led the Yellow Jacket effort offensively.
Up next, Clemson (11-17, 5-12 ACC) closes it out its 2019 slate at Syracuse (10-13, 7-9 ACC) on Friday, Nov. 29. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is set to air on ACC Network.
