CLEMSON, SC – Ninth-ranked Georgia Tech scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-0 victory over top-ranked Clemson Monday night at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Yellow Jackets handed the Tigers back-to-back losses and won a regular season series from Clemson for the first time since Florida State swept the Tigers in April 2001. Georgia Tech improved to 38-10 and 12-8 in the ACC while dropping Clemson to 39-8 and 13-5 in the ACC.
Chris Goodman (6-0) dominated the Tiger offense to earn the victory. The righthander went eight shutout innings, striking out seven and walking just one batter while yielding five hits. He retired 12 out of 13 batters through the middle innings. Starter B.J. LaMura (5-2) got the loss for Clemson. Jeff Watchko pitched a scoreless ninth to shutout Clemson for the second time this season.
Jeremy Slayden started things for Georgia Tech in the first inning with a two-run homer. LaMura then walked three straight batters before giving up a two-run single to Brandon Boggs. Matthew Boggs followed two batters later with a two-run double to the gap in right center off of reliever Tyler Lumsden to cap the six-run inning.
The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at second and third and one out, Matthew Boggs laid down a sacrifice bunt that Lumsden threw low to first base. Michael Johnson appeared to scoop the ball up but umpire Al Davis ruled that Johnson bobbled the ball, scoring one run and leaving runners at first and second. Patterson followed with an RBI-single to right for an 8-0 lead.
Georgia Tech scored another run off a wild pitch in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to make the final margin 11-0.
Khalil Greene extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the sixth inning with a single through the left side. Johnson went 3-4 and joined Russell Triplett as the only Tigers with more than one hit. Matthew Boggs went 4-4 with a career-high five RBIs to lead the Yellow Jackets.
Clemson will next play host to Wofford this Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM.
