PREVIEW

  • 10-seed Clemson takes a 42-16 overall record into the second game of the 2022 Stillwater Super Regionals against 7-seed Oklahoma State.
  • The Tigers were named the No. 10 national seed during the NCAA Selection Show and hosted a regional in only the third year of the program.
  • The Tigers have outscored opponents 281-133 in games this season and run-ruled 13 opponents – including UNC Wilmington and Louisiana in the Clemson Regional.
  • Clemson has 400 hits through 58 games, including posting 67 doubles and 67 home runs.
  • The Tigers’ pitching staff is posting a 1.79 ERA through 378.1 innings of work and struck out a combined 341 batters.
  • The Tigers are 5-3 in NCAA Tournament appearances after winning the three games of the 2022 regional, dropping the opening game to Oklahoma State and splitting action, 2-2, in the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2021.
  • The trip to Stillwater marks Clemson’s first Super Regional appearance.

CAGLE CALLS GAME

  • Redshirt sophomore Valerie Cagle has been a dominant force for the Tigers at the plate and in the circle since her arrival to Clemson.
  • In 2022, she is posting a 1.96 ERA through 153.2 innings pitched with 172 strikeouts.
  • Cagle is used to big-game situations and thrives with the ball in her hand against ranked opponents.
  • In the Clearwater tournament, Cagle threw a complete-game shutout against then No. 6/5 Washington with 10 strikeouts and hit a solo homer in Clemson’s upset victory.
  • At the ACC Softball tournament, she pitched 7.0 innings against then No. 2/2 Virginia Tech allowing only four hits and one run to score to upset the Hokies in the semifinal round.
  • At the plate in the Clemson Regional against Louisiana, Cagle went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored to propel the Tigers to their first Super Regional appearance.
  • The Yorktown, Va. native is a NFCA First Team All-Region selection, a First Team All-ACC honoree and an ACC All-Tournament player. She was also named a 2022 USA Softball Player of the Year Top 25 Finalist in April in back-to-back years.

GAME ONE RECAP

  • The Tigers dropped the opening game of the Stillwater Regional to 7-seed Oklahoma State on Thursday evening, 2-0.
  • Sophomore Millie Thompson pitched her 10th complete game of the season as she fell to 15-4 on the year. She struck out two batters through 27 batters faced.
  • Valerie Cagle and senior Marissa Guimbarda were the lone Tigers to tally a hit for Clemson.
  • The game was scoreless until the fifth inning after the Cowgirls led off with a double. A sac bunt, a walk and a single led to OSU scoring two with only one out.
  • The Clemson defense shut things down to prevent any further runs to score that inning.
  • The Tigers brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but weren’t able to capitalize on it as the Cowgirls took game one.
