Freshmen Help Tigers to Comeback Win at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After falling behind 3-0 to start the match, the Clemson women’s tennis team came roaring back with four-straight singles wins, including three by freshmen, to claim a 4-3 victory on the road against Notre Dame on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improved to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in ACC play, while the Irish fell to 10-10 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

The doubles matches were highly competitive on all three courts, but the Irish picked up the win, with 6-4 victories on courts 2 and 1, in that order. When doubles play was halted, Joana Eidukonyte and Jenny Moinard were tied 6-6 and headed to a tiebreak with their Notre Dame opponent at No. 3.

The Irish’s momentum continued into the first two matches of singles play, as Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 6 and No. 4, in that order. Eidukonyte picked up Clemson’s first point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles, and the momentum began to swing toward the Tigers. Freshman Ayan Broomfield, ranked 73rd nationally, fought for a 6-2, 7-6(9-7) victory at No. 1 over 64th-ranked Quinn Gleason. With the score 3-2 in favor of the Irish, freshman Fernanda Navarro won a three-set decision at No. 3 to tie the team score. The final point came down to rookie Ally Miller-Krasilnikov at No. 5, who put up a great fight to come up with a 7-6(10-8), 6-4 win to clinch the victory for the Tigers.
