CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Brandon Streeter, benched only a week ago, returned to throw for 191 yards and two touchdowns as Clemson broke its worst losing streak in 23 years with a 23-0 victory over Maryland on Saturday.
It wasn’t the prettiest game in college football history, but it was more than enough for the Tigers (2-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who were reeling after four consecutive losses.
The time looked right for the Terps (2-4, 0-3) to break through against Clemson, where they have scored only 12 points in their last six games.
Streeter, a junior succeeding career passing leader Nealon Greene, had thrown nine interceptions during Clemson’s fall and sat out most of last week’s 21-14 loss at North Carolina.
But he was back in the lineup against Maryland, and finally back in control. He completed his first five passes and threw for 118 yards by halftime.
His 31-yard pass to Martin led to David Richardson’s 42-yard field goal. Streeter set up Clemson’s touchdown with a 17-yard throw to Brian Wofford, then found Martin on a square out to the right side. Martin wriggled away from a defender and dived into the end zone.
Streeter raised his hands and high-stepped back to the sidelines as his teammates pounded his helmet and pads.
Streeter added a 28-yard scoring pass to Brian Wofford and Travis Zachery had a 26-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Clemson’s defense, third overall in the ACC, made sure the lead held up with its fourth shutout of Maryland since 1993.
The Tigers pounded the Terps and Randall Jones, the first freshman to start at quarterback at Maryland. Jones, given the job after keeping the Terps close in a 24-10 loss to Florida State a week ago, was only 4-of-11 in the first half. Jones was lifted after three second-half series and finished 7-of-18 with 69 yards.
Clemson got five sacks and held the Terps to 170 yards.
The Tigers came into the game last in the ACC in offense and next to last in rushing. Both categories perked up against Maryland as the Clemson gained 399 yards overall, 201 rushing, and looked confident moving the ball.
