CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson sophomore Cristina Mayorova and junior Ali DeSpain have both received ITA individual rankings. Mayorova is ranked No. 70 while DeSpain is tabbed as the 84th-ranked singles player. This marks both players’ first appearance in the singles rankings.
On her way into the rankings, Mayorova defeated the 13th-ranked player, Carson Tanguilig out of North Carolina by a scoreline of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). She also made it to the final of her flight at the Debbie Southern Invitational by defeating Fernanda Lebrana of Texas 7-6 (3), 6-1.
DeSpain’s highest ranked win came against Tennessee’s Elza Tomase who clocked in at No. 56 in the rankings. She came out on top of her flight at the Debbie Southern Invitational twice, winning in comeback fashion. The semifinal resulted in a DeSpain 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory and the final match was won by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Mayorova, DeSpain and the Tigers will be back in action after the turn of the calendar year when they open up their season against College of Charleston and Presbyterian on Sunday, Jan. 16.
