Cope Medals in Weight Throw, Tigers Shine in Day One of ACC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Clemson Tigers impressed on the first day of the 2024 ACC Indoor Championships as three athletes earned All-ACC honors and Daniel Cope secured the silver medal in the men’s weight throw.

“After the first day, both teams have put themselves in position to have the success we are striving for,” Track and Field Director Mark Elliot said.

Along with the medal and his second-place finish, Cope was named First Team All-ACC following his performance in the cages. The two other All-ACC honors come from the women’s side as Nia Christie was named Second Team All-ACC for the women’s high jump and Marie Forbes was also crowned Second Team All-ACC for the women’s weight throw.

Events will continue tomorrow, Feb. 23 as the 60 meter hurdles portion of men’s heptathlon is set to start at 11 a.m. The meet will be broadcasted on ACCNX.

Meet Highlights

  • Daniel Cope secured the silver medal in the men’s weight throw after throwing 21.71m to secure second place in the event.
  • In the men’s 200 meter, Cameron Rose (20.83), D’Andre Anderson (20.92) and Tahj Hamm (21.29) all placed within the top 8 to advance themselves to Saturday’s finals for the 200
  • In the women’s 200 meter, Antoinette Van Der Merwe (23.56) and Ockera Myrie (23.74) placed within the top 8 to advance themselves to Saturday’s finals for the 200
  • Nia Christie was named Second Team All-ACC after tying sixth in the women’s high jump, the junior cleared 1.72m to secure a new personal best
  • In the women’s weight throw, Marie Forbes threw a mark of 20.50m to secure fourth place and be named Second Team All-ACC.
  • Sawyer Dagan added his name to Clemson’s all-time list for the men’s 5000 meter as he completed the event in 14:10.65, placing him No. 9 on the Top 10 list which was a new personal best.
  • Isabelle Kapoor recorded a new personal best in the women’s pentathlon as she finished the event with a total of 3168 points
