@ClemsonWTennis Advances to #ITAKickoff Second Round

CLEMSON, SC – The 13th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won the doubles point and used three victories from its top three singles players in a 4-0 sweep of No. 56 Fresno State in the ITA Kickoff Weekend first round at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers (3-0) advance to play No. 32 Tennessee (1-0), who topped No. 27 Purdue, 4-3, earlier in the day. The Tigers and Vols will meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday with a bid to the Team National Indoor Championships on the line.  Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies continued their strong doubles play, defeating No. 41 Agrawal and Yang, 6-0, to improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in dual match play. They have dropped a total of two games in their three matches this dual match season, and have won six in a row dating to the fall.  Yana Koroleva and Tristen Dewar clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court two over Malysheva and Murtagh, as they improved to 8-3 as a duo this year.  Koroleva, ranked 74th in the nation, improved to 9-1 in her last ten matches with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 104 Sophie Watts on court one. The senior is 9-3 on the year, and has dropped just five games in two dual matches.  No. 51 Romy Koelzer gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead with her 6-4, 6-2 win on court two, her fifth straight win overall.  Clemson’s highest-ranked singles player, Gumulya, closed the match with her 50th career victory, a 6-3, 6-1 win on court three over Anna Susdorf. She upped her all-time record to 50-15 in her career.  Tristen Dewar was in a third set tiebreaker when play was halted due to the “clinch-clinch” format in play during the tournament.  The winner of tomorrow’s meeting between Clemson and Tennessee will advance to Charlottesville, VA for the Team National Indoor Championships from Feb. 7-10. The Tigers have advanced to the national site in six of the last seven seasons.  Fresno State and Purdue will play at 9 a.m. at the indoor center as well in a consolation match.  Tennis Match Results Fresno State vs Clemson Jan 25, 2014 at Clemson, SC (Clemson Indoor Tennis Center) #13 Clemson 4, #56 Fresno State 0 Singles competition 1. #74 Yana Koroleva (CU) def. #104 Sophie Watts (FS) 6-2, 6-2 2. #51 Romy Koelzer (CU) def.
