Clemson’s Martin Wins Palmetto Amateur

July 5, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson red-shirt freshman Ben Martin won his second amateur golf tournament of the summer when he captured the Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, SC on Sunday. Martin is the second Clemson golfer to win the event in the last three years. Brian Duncan, a senior on Clemson’s 2006 team, won the Palmetto Amateur in 2004.

Martin had rounds of 65-73-68-66 for a 272 score that was eight under par on the par 70 Palmetto Golf Club Course. Martin, who had a 4.0 GPA in the classroom in the spring semester, won the event by eight shots over George Bryan IV, who finished with a 280 score.

Earlier this summer Martin won the Festival of Flowers Amateur in Greenwood, SC. Martin, a native of Greenwood who sat out the 2005-06 season at Clemson, had finished sixth at the Palmetto Amateur last year. He won the Southern Cross Tournament on the same course in 2005 the summer before he came to Clemson.
