Clemson Wraps up Doc Hosea Invite

Full Results (PDF)

CHERRY HILL, NJ. – With third place finishes, all three of the Clemson Tigers boats earned themselves a spot in the grand final races at the Doc Hosea Invite on Saturday, March 30. The Tigers fell out of the top three in the grand finals, with the 1v8 placing fourth and the 2v8 and 1v4 each placing fifth.

“I’m proud of the effort these Tigers put forth today” said Head Coach Stephen Frazier Wong. “All three of our boats met our first goal of qualifying for the Grand Final from the heats. They stepped up to the pressure and took care of business. The 1V8 came the closest, within 5 hundredths of a second, of achieving our other goal of top three finishes. They raced really aggressively and will take away the importance of closing out opponents for the next race. Our 2V8 went out hard and fast in the first half of the race, but unfortunately fell back in the second thousand meters. The 1V4 were our gutsiest performers of the weekend as they had never before raced in this combination which included two true novices. They put up a great time in the heat to qualify, but the conditions proved a little too much for them in the Grand Final. They have lots of potential though so we are excited for them to get faster as they gel with more time rowing together.”

The Tigers started the day at 8:10 a.m. with the 1v8 finishing at 6:39.76 minutes to earn third place. Shortly after, Clemson’s 2v8 raced at 8:30 a.m. and also finished in third place with a 6:56.30 time. Then to wrap up the first round of races, Clemson’s 1v4 competed at 8:50 a.m. and also placed third at a 7:41.16 time.

Because of Clemson’s successful first races, they were able to join Penn, Rutgers, Northeastern, Columbia, Rhode Island and George Washington in the grand finals. Penn and Rutgers took first and second place respectively in all three races. The Tigers 1v8 boat placed the highest with a fourth place finish at 6:27.88 minutes. Then Clemson’s 2v8 and 1v4 boat each placed fifth with a 7:02.11 and 7:57.83 time respectively.

Up Next: The Tigers will get back on the water in three weeks when they travel to Sarasota, Fla. for the the Big 10 Invite on April 19 and 20.
