OAK RIDGE, TENN. — The Clemson rowing team wrapped up the two-day Cardinal Invite on Sunday with races against Alabama and Indiana.
After seeing improvements during racing on Saturday from performances at the Cardinal Invite in past years, the team went into today ready for the chance to compete. The top result of the day came from the 3V8+ as they battled to second place finish with a time of 6:21.854, a commanding 12 seconds ahead of third-place Indiana.
The strong results of the 3V8+ during their three races this weekend were a testament to the depth and development of the team as a whole. The boat was comprised mostly of true novices, which are athletes who had not rowed before college. Grit was shown throughout all of the boats. On Saturday morning, the 1V8+ came through the first 500 meters at an open water deficit to Tennessee. Thanks to a consistent and powerful performance they were able to make up the open water and defeat Tennessee to claim second-place.
Most of Clemson’s student body is away from campus this upcoming week for spring break, but the team will continue to build on this season’s progress with spring training camp.
The Tigers are back in action this weekend as they take a trip up north to New Jersey for the Cooper Sprints on March 24th. This trip marks a homecoming for some of the team, as six student-athletes call the New Jersey/Philadelphia area home.
