Clemson Women’s Tennis Upset By Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team pulled off its biggest win of the season thus far as the Hokies upset to No. 39 Clemson Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech Campus. The Hokies, ranked 67th in this weeks’ WingspanBank.com poll, captured two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day then won four of the six singles matches to claim the win.

Virginia Tech (3-2) won at No. 1 where Kristen Stubbs easily defeated Christina Oldock 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 3 as junior Ines Khelifi beat Laurence Jayet 6-2, 7-5. Tech’s other singles victories occurred at No. 5 as sophomore Bridget Bruner defeated Milena Stanoytcheva 6-3, 6-4 and at No. 6 where sophomore Kristin Lanio outlasted Anna Dolinska 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Clemson picked up singles wins at No. 2 where Anna Savitskaya defeated Antonella Pozzi 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 and at No. 4 as Anna Stiglic beat Michele Martaus 6-4, 6-4.

The Hokies captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Stubbs and Pozzi won at No. 2 over Stanoytcheva and Dolinska 8-5 and won the deciding match at No. 3 as Bruner and Lanio won a hard-fought 9-7 decision against Oldock and Stiglic. Clemson captured the No. 1 match as Savitskaya and Jayet defeated Martaus and Khelifi 8-2.

Tech will be back in action next Friday at 1 p.m. when the Hokies host Pittsburgh. All matches are played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus and admission is free.
