Clemson Women’s Tennis Team Upsets North Carolina, 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The 16th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #12 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-1. This is the second consecutive year that Clemson has upset a higher-seeded North Carolina during the regular season. With the win, the Tigers improve to 18-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Clemson will wrap up its regular season schedule at Duke in a noon match at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The fourth-ranked Blue Devils enter Sunday’s match with a 17-2 overall record and a 7-0 mark in ACC matches.

Against North Carolina, the Tigers captured the doubles point with victories at the second and third positions. Clemson’s number one tandem of Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie fell to UNC’s Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline by a score of 9-7. The Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito topped Kendrick Bunn and Lee Bairos at number two doubles by a score of 8-3, and Clemson’s Karen Rombouts and Richele LeSaldo defeated Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, 8-4, at number three doubles.

In singles play against the Tar Heels, top-seeded and eighth-ranked Julie Coin dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to UNC’s 28th-ranked Aniela Mojzis. At two singles, #84 Alix Lacelarie defeated Caitlin Collins by a score of 6-3, 6-4 at three singles, and Maria Brito topped Sara Anundsen at the four singles position (6-4, 6-4). The Tigers’ Karen Rombouts rounded out the Tigers’ singles lineup with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kendrick Bunn.
