Clemson Women’s Tennis Team Upsets #20 Georgia Tech On Thursday

CLEMSON, SC – The 23rd-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #20 Georgia Tech on Thursday afternoon by a score of 4-3 in Clemson. With the win, the Tigers improve to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The upset was the second straight for Clemson, as the team defeated 21st-ranked Virginia 5-2 in its last outing.

Clemson won two out of three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. The Tigers’ 31st-ranked duo of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet defeated Georgia Tech’s #34 Kelly Anderson and Jaime Wong by a score of 8-6 at flight one. Clemson’s 59th-ranked team of Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie won an 8-4 decision over the Yellow Jackets’ Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho at number two doubles. At flight three, the Tigers’ Anna Dolinska and Ioana Paun fell to Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto by a score of 8-1.

In singles action, Clemson dropped the first two matches before winning three in a row to clinch the victory. Ana Stiglic dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Shosho at flight six, while Jayet fell to Morris, 6-2, 6-3 at flight four. Clemson’s 21st-ranked Coin defeated the Yellow Jackets’ Gunn, 6-2, 6-3 at number one singles and Paun won a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Grant at flight five. Then Lacelarie upset 70th-ranked Wong by a score of 6-3, 6-3 at flight two to seal the win for Clemson. The Tigers’ Alvarez lost in three sets, 6-7(7), 6-4, (10-3) to the Yellow Jackets’ #118 Kelly Anderson at three singles.

Clemson will return to action on Sunday, Apr. 6 as the Tigers play host to ACC rival Florida State at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center at 12:00 p.m.
