Clemson Women’s Tennis Posts 5-2 Victory Over South Carolina

CLEMSON, SC – The 12th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over in-state rival South Carolina at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 7-2 overall while the Gamecocks fell to 5-2 on the year.

Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the match with wins at the flights one and two doubles positions, clinching the double point for the sixth straight match. Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem, the #55-ranked team, upset South Carolina’s 41st-ranked team of Ana Zubori and Gira Schofield, 8-1, at the top position, while Estefania Balda and Carol Salge defeated Christyn Lucas and Natasa Vuckovic by an 8-3 margin at number two. The Tiger team of Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc suffered its first loss of the dual season, falling to Laura Ganzer and Vanessa Pinto at flight three (8-5).

Mijacika, a freshman from Makarska, Croatia, improved to 6-2 during the spring season with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Schofield at the number one singles position. South Carolina’s Pinto posted the win at flight two as Salge retired during the first set. In the number three match-up, #84 Balda defeated Vuckovic by a 6-3, 6-3 score, while 91st-ranked van Adrichem won, 6-4, 6-1, over Ganzer at flight four.

Clemson’s Ina Hadziselimovic fell to Lucas at the number five position, 7-5, 6-4, while Brito defeated Megan McGavok by a 6-3, 6-1 margin at flight six.

The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 1 as they will play host to South Alabama. The doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm from the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
