Clemson Women’s Tennis Opens 2006 Season With A Win

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team downed the College of Charleston, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The match was the 16th-ranked Tigers’ first of the 2006 season, giving them a 1-0 record. The loss dropped the Cougars to 0-2 on the year.

The Tigers won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Clemson’s 19th-ranked duo of Daniela Alvarez and Federica van Adrichem defeated Chelsea Albertz and Payten Ellington at the flight one position, 8-4, while Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc won an 8-4 decision at No. 2 over the Cougar team of Maxine Capewell and Ashley Finnegan. At the flight three position, the Tiger tandem of Carol Salge and Marie Scriba handled Amanda Becker and Jenna Marks, claiming an 8-0 victory.

The Cougars were no match for the Clemson squad in singles play either, as the Tigers won all six matches in just two sets. Freshman Luc defeated Marks at flight six, 6-2, 6-2, while sophomore Kathi Gerber claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ellington at the flight five slot. Alvarez clinched the match for Clemson with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Capewell at No. 1, and Salge gave the Tigers’ their fifth point after defeating Finnegan at flight four, 6-0, 6-3.

Brito won her match at the flight two position verse Albertz by a 6-4, 6-4 margin. Albertz held a 4-3 lead in the second set before Brito tied the score at 4-4. Brito then broke Albertz’ serve to take a 5-4 lead and held her own serve for the victory. At flight three, 41st-ranked van Adrichem held a 5-2 advantage in the first set, but Becker came back to knot the match at 5-5. Van Adrichem won the next two games for a 7-5 victory and then easily handled Becker in the second set for a 6-2 win.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday, Feb. 4 when they will play host to Virginia Commonwealth. Clemson will battle the Rams at 11 AM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
