GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team won a hard-faught battle with Furman 5-3 Saturday at Furman’s Minor Mickel Tennis Center.
In what turned out to the decisive match, Clemson’s Anna Savitskaya edged Furman’s Emelie Isaksson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 5 singles to propel the Lady Tigers to victory. At No. 1 singles, Clemson’s Carmina Giraldo rallied from a second set deficit to down Megan Dunigan 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Furman won singles matches at No.’s 3 and 6 singles as Gene Holman won her sixth staright match and Natalie The earned a key victory at No. 6.
In doubles action, Furman’s Dunigan and Holman downed Renata Brio and Laurence Jayet 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Clemson cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles was not played in order to allow the Furman-Clemson men’s tennis match to start on the indoor courts at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center.
Clemson improves to 8-2 on the season, while Furman falls to 6-4. The Lady Paladins host 40th ranked South Florida this Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
