Clemson Women’s Tennis Falls In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament To North Carolina, 4-1

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Clemson women’s tennis team fell to the University of North Carolina, 4-1, on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Today’s meeting with North Carolina was the third of the season for the two teams. Clemson won the first match on April 13 by a score of 4-3, but the 11th-ranked Tar Heels rebounded to defeat the Tigers 4-0 in the ACC Tournament on April 19. Clemson defeated Baylor 4-1 on Saturday, to advance to this afternoon’s regional finals.

North Carolina claimed the doubles point, with wins at flight one and two doubles. The seventh-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis defeated the Tigers’ top team of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet by a score of 8-5 at flight one. Clemson’s Alix Lacelarie and Daniela Alvarez lost their first match of the season at flight two doubles to UNC’s Marlene Meiga and Lee Bairos, 8-6. This afternoon’s loss marked only the second time this season that Lacelarie and Alvarez have lost a match (18-2). The pair’s only other loss was at number one doubles, when Maryland’s But and Jedrjezak defeated Lacelarie and Alvarez 8-6.

In singles action, North Carolina’s Kendrick Bunn defeated Clemson’s Laurence Jayet 7-5, 6-3, at flight five singles. The Tigers’ Alix Lacelarie at flight two singles.

Clemson, which is ranked 19th, completes its season with a 19-6 record, the best record since the 1993 season when the Tigers were 20-6 overall and ranked 12th in the final ITA poll. This year’s second round appearance is the second consecutive for the Tigers, who have made four NCAA Tournament appearance under sixth-year head coach Nancy Harris.
