Clemson Women’s Tennis Downs Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The 13th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated #36 Arizona State on Friday evening in Tempe, Ariz. The Tigers improve to 13-3 overall (2-0 ACC) with the win over the Sun Devils.

Clemson won two out of three doubles matches to earn the team doubles point. The Tigers’ seventh-ranked team of Maria Brito and Julie Coin won an 8-3 decision over Arizona State’s Kady Pooler and Lauren Colalillo at flight one. At the number two doubles position, Clemson’s Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie, ranked 12th by the ITA, fell to the Sun Devil’s team of Wendy Pilecka and Cindy Sureephong by a score of 8-6. The Tigers’ Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts were victorious over ASU’s Joslynn Burkett and Sabrina Capannolo at flight three doubles by a score of 8-6.

In singles action, sixth-ranked Coin defeated Burkett by a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 at flight one. Alvarez (#68) won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Pilecka at number two singles. Brito, ranked in a tie for 91st by the ITA, was victorious over Vana Tomas (6-1, 6-2) at the flight three singles slot. Rombouts dropped a three-set decision (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) to Sureephong at four singles, while Lacelarie fell to Capannolo (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) at number five singles. At flight six, LeSaldo lost a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Colalillo.

Clemson will return to action next weekend for home matches against Maryland and Virginia. The Tigers will face the Terrapins on Saturday, March 27 at 11:00 a.m. and will play host to the Cavaliers on Sunday, March 28 at 12:00 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Clemson’s campus.
