Clemson Women’s Soccer Team Opens 2012 Season with Win over Appalachian State

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team opened the 2012 season on Friday night at Historic Riggs Field with a 1-0 win over Appalachian State.  Freshman midfielder Allie Kington scored the game’s lone goal, and the first of her career, as the Tigers improved to 1-0 and the Mountaineers fell to 0-1.

The Tigers had several chances in the first half, perhaps the best coming with less than 40 seconds to play.  Junior midfielder Vanessa Laxgang found an open Liska Dobberstein with a pass inside the box, but the sophomore forward’s shot was stopped on the ground by App State’s keeper Amy Kolowsky.

In the first half, Clemson took 13 shots and had three corner kicks, while the Mountaineers took six shots and had two corner kicks.  Freshman Hunter Rittgers posted two saves in goal for the Tigers and Kolowsky tallied six in the half for the Mountaineers.

The Tigers put the game’s lone goal on the board in the 64th minute of play.  Senior midfielder Maddy Elder led junior forward Tabitha Padgett with a pass out to the left side of the field.  Padgett crossed it to Kington, who headed the ball into the left corner of the net for her first goal of the season, and her career.

“I saw the play progressing up the field and my teammates connected on some great passes,” said Kington.  “Tab (Padgett) put the pass in the perfect spot for me to score.  It felt pretty great to put one away in my first game.”

Overall in the game, the Tigers took 25 shots and had eight corner kicks, and App State took 11 shots and had four corner kicks.  Rittgers recorded five saves in her first career win and shutout, and Kolowsky finished the game with 11 saves for the Mountaineers.

“This was a good win.  App State played well.  I was pleased with what we were creating, from an attacking standpoint,” said Head Coach Eddie Radwanski.  “We were a little over-anxious in the box, which is understandable for the first game.

“The good news is that, even though we didn’t take advantage of all of our opportunities, we were patient.  Hunter made good saves when she was called on, and we scored a very pretty goal.  It was nice to get the win and get off to a good start.”

The Tigers will return to action on Sunday, August 19 as they play host to North Florida at 1:00 PM at Historic Riggs Field.  The game will be broadcast live in HD for free on ClemsonTigers.com via TigerCast.  Admission is free for all home Clemson women’s soccer games.
