Clemson Women’s Cross Country Wins South Carolina State Cross Country Title

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s cross country team won the South Carolina Collegiate Championships and finished third at the Clemson Invitational held Saturday. The Lady Tigers accrued 58 points in the Clemson Invitational, while Emory won the meet with 39 points. South Carolina was the runner-up with 54 points. Western Carolina placed fourth with 115 points, UNC Greensboro amassed 154 points for fifth place and Georgia Southern tallied 167 points for sixth place. Gardner-Webb finished seventh with 183 points, Southern Wesleyan tallied 223 points, Charleston Southern placed ninth with 238 points and Piedmont and South Carolina State tied for 10th with 286 points each.

In the South Carolina Collegiate Championships, Clemson won the team title with 26 points, followed by South Carolina with 29 points. Southern Wesleyan took third place with 92 points, Charleston Southern was fourth with 108 points and South Carolina State finished fifth with 136 points. Casey Phillips, Patrice McMillan, Jennifer Barton, Sudati Masasu and Laura Ann Rukat also earned all-state honors.

“I am very proud of the way the team competed today,” said assistant track and field and cross country coach AuDrey Branch. “We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we are on our way to doing some good things in the near future. We have some good talent and I think we are going to put Clemson cross country back on top very soon.”

Casey Phillips won the individual crown in both the Clemson Invitational and South Carolina Collegiate Championships, breaking the tape in 18:03.90. This was her second career collegiate individual title. Patrice McMillan was 10th for the Lady Tigers, finishing in 19:03.90. Jennifer Barton took 11th place in 19:04.30 and Sudati Masasu completed the 5K race in 19:10.70. Laura Ann Rukat was 24th with her time of 20:01.40 and Lauren Edwards finished in 36th with a time of 20:42.50. Lauren Brewer clocked a 20:43.20 to place 37th and Thea Dix was 39th in 20:43.70. Hannah Wright’s time of 20:46.20 was good for 40th place and Jennifer Hooten finished 43rd in 20:59.00. Jennifer Schweer ran a 21:35.00 to place 52nd, Katie Boehm was 56th in 22:01.30 and Kerry Foltz placed 64th in 22:24.90. Keri Deily crossed the finish line in 22:56.80 for 69th place, while LaToya Woodberry completed the race in 24:29.80 for 79th place.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Sept. 25, as they travel to College Park, MD, for the Pre-ACC meet.
