Clemson Women’s Basketball Downs Virginia Tech 80-59

Clemson, SC – Clemson placed six players in double figures in defeating Virginia Tech 80-59 in college women’s basketball action on Monday night.

The Lady Tigers improved to 7-2 with the victory, while Virginia Tech fell to 6-3. Clemson’s next contest will be Thursday night against Auburn in a game that will be played in Myrtle Beach, SC.

It was the first of two intercollegiate contests between Clemson and Virginia Tech in a two-week period. The two schools will meet in the Toyota Gator Bowl on January 1 in Jacksonville, FL.

Clemson was led in scoring by Erin Batth, who tallied 13 points from her center position. The senior leader was supported by three players with 12 points, Chrissy Floyd, Maggie Slosser and Nuria Forns. Marci Glenney and Krystal Scott added 11 points apiece for the Lady Tigers.

Glenney was very productive, as the UCONN transfer scored her 11 points in 15 minutes. She also added three assists and shot 4-5 from the field. Batth and Forns led Clemson in rebounding with six. Slosser’s 12 points came in a reserve role in 22 minutes. It was her season high in scoring and playing time. Scott hada game high five assists and a game high three steals.

Virginia Tech was led by Tere Williams with 14 points, while Amy Wetzel had 10. Chrystal Starling added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench in just 19 minutes for the Hokies.

Clemson played a strong first half and led by 19 points at intermission. Clemson forced 19 turnovers to match its scoring margin, and did not allow Virginia Tech to score a three-point goal in the first 20 minutes. Floyd scored all 12 of her points in the first half, including a pair of three-point goals.

Clemson improved the lead to a gamebest 25 points in the first six minutes of the second half. Nuria Forns completed a 7-0 run when she scored off an in-bounds pass from Kanetra Queen. Virginia Tech cut the lead to 16 with a 9-0 run, but that was as close as Virginia Tech could get. Clemson’s lead stayed near 20 the remainder of the game. A three-point goal by Heather Crowe with three seconds left gave Clemson the 21-point margin.

“I liked the intensity and desire of our team tonight,” said Clemson Head Coach Chrissy Floyd and Maggie Slosser did a good job, they were a key to our run in the first half. I was disappointed in the free throw shooting, we have to do better than 61 percent, and we must improve our rebounding (-6 margin). But, I thought a real plus was our pressure defense, which forced 30 turnovers. “
