Sept. 21, 2009

Complete Game Notes

Clemson vs. TCU Series This is the fourth meeting between Clemson and TCU, but the first since the 1965 season. Clemson won the first meeting in the first Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston by a 23-7 score. The Horned Frogs won the next meeting at TCU in 1964 by a 14-10 score. The Tigers won the most recent contest in Clemson by a 3-0 score in 1965.

Tigers Take on Ranked Team at Death Valley Clemson will play host to a top 15 TCU team in Clemson Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Clemson has a 26-29 record all-time against top 25 teams at home, including a 7-11-1 record against non-conference top 25 teams.

Clemson has won four of its last six against top 25 non-conference teams in Clemson Memorial Stadium, including the last occasion, a 25-24 victory over another school from the state of Texas, 17th ranked Texas A&M team to open the 2005 season. Jad Dean kicked a record six field goals in that game. Richard Jackson tied that record with six made field goals against Boston College last week.

This will be just the fourth non-conference game in the last 20 years at Clemson against a top 25 team. Tommy Bowden’s teams had all three of those between 2000 and 2005. A non-conference top 25 team did not come to Clemson in the decade of the 1990s.

The first time a top 25 non-ACC team came to Clemson was 14th ranked Auburn in 1953. The War Eagles came away with a 45-19 victory. Clemson won over a 16th ranked Virginia Tech team by a 21-6 score in 1956. Clemson then lost seven in a row against top 25 non-ACC teams before ending the streak with a 27-6 win over 14th ranked South Carolina in 1980.
