Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell

Overall thoughts: “I felt like it was a workmen like win for us tonight. We were not as sharp as we should have been, but we need to better and we know that. I thought we made some good adjustments in the second half and our guys defended much better. We tried to emphasize going inside more and I thought Jerai (Grant) and Milton (Jennings) both did a good job.”

On Milton Jennings’ double-double: “He is a guy that you have to be a little patient with, and he has to know that you are with him and that you believe in him. He does not have a lot of experience but he is comfortable playing different positions and stepping away from the basket. We have given him a chance to do that and that has made him more comfortable. I am most pleased with the 10 rebounds, though.”

On the start of the second half: “I just think our defense was much better. We talked about how we were disappointed with the effort at the half and for them to shoot the ball as well as they were, we needed to play better. We just seemed a half-step late to everything and to their credit the made some plays. We made some adjustments with a little bit more pressure and a little better help.”

South Carolina State Head Coach Tim Carter

Overall thoughts on the game: “After halftime, I thought we had a shot and a chance to make it a little closer. I thought Clemson did a very good job in the second half. They turned the steam up defensively. They finished under the basket and we just could not finish. That was really the ballgame. We got a number of really good looks under the basket, we just couldn’t finish. You’re only going to get one shot against these guys. I told my guys that I thought we hustled well and I thought we played hard and we got better, but the better team won tonight.”

On playing time of Darnell Porter: “I made that decision. (Demontez) Stitt didn’t start either so I guess Brad (Brownell) and I were both trying to get some players’ attention.”

On second half play of Clemson: “They stayed consistent with their defense. All night they hard edged our ball screens. The difference was that we were only getting one shot. They were finishing under the bucket. They were going inside, which is what you’re supposed to do when you’re playing a smaller team like us. They kept going inside and we just couldn’t defend it. I really thought they would have gone inside a little more, but I thought our guys really battled.”
