Oliver Purnell recorded his 300th career win as a Division Ihead coach with Saturday’s 95-82 victory over Georgia Tech. Clemsonwill enter the ACC Tournament on a three-game winning streak, allagainst ACC teams. This is the first time since 1964 that Clemsonhas won its last three league games entering the tournament. VernonHamilton’s 24 points off the bench were his second highest scoringgame as a Tiger. Ironically, both of his top scoring games havebeen off the bench. His career high is 31 against Duke in a reserverole earlier this year. Hamilton has two of the top three scoringgames by a reserve by an ACC player this year. His 31 pointsagainst Duke are the high figure and his 24 today tied AdrianJoseph (Virginia vs. Loyola) earlier this year. Hamilton has thetop two reserve scoring games against ACC teams this year. Clemsonshot 65.6 percent from the field in the second half (21-32), thebest field goal percentage for a half by a Tiger team this year andthe best since the season opener against Hampton last year whenClemson shot 67.6. Clemson had three 20-point scorers today, asVernon Hamilton’s had 24, Akin Akingbala 22 and Shawan Robinson 22.It is the first time Clemson has had three 20-point scorers in thesame game since Feb. 13, 2002 when Clemson had three 20 pointscorers (Chris Hobbs 24, Tony Stockman 30, Edward Scott 30) in adouble overtime victory against Wake Forest. Akingbala and Robinsonboth scored 22 points on their Senior Day game. It marked the firsttime that two different Clemson seniors had at least 20 points onSenior Day since Feb. 28, 1970 when Butch Zatezalo scored 25 andRichie Mahaffey had 26 in a 105-95 win over Wake Forest. ShawanRobinson scored 39 points this week, three points in the two firsthalves combined and 36 in the two second halves combined. Robinsondid not have more than four three-point goals in the first 24games, but has now had exactly five in four of the last five games,including each game this week. Robinson was joined on the courtafter the game by the 20 students in the fifth grade class heteaches this semester at Central Elementary in Central, SC.Robinson is student teaching this semester to complete his degreerequirements in Elementary Education. He is on track to become thefirst basketball player in Clemson history to be named first-teamAcademic All-ACC four times. Vernon Hamilton’s became Clemson’scareer leader in steals with his four thefts today. He now has 196for his career, two more than Terrell McIntyre had between 1995-99.Hamilton’s 24 points today were the most by a Clemson underclassmanon a Senior Day game since 2002 when then junior Edward Scottscored 36 in a victory over Florida State. *Clemson overcame ahalftime deficit to gain victory three times this year and two ofthe three came against Georgia Tech, the only two in ACC play.Clemson trailed Tech by five at halftime in the game at GeorgiaTech earlier this year and by three today. Akin Akingbala had 22points and 11 rebounds today, giving him 43 points and 27 reboundsfor the week. It is the first time in his career that he has hadback to back 20 point games. It was his fifth double-double in thelast eight games. Cliff Hammonds had five assists and on turnovertoday. Over the last three games covering 88 minutes he has 12assists and one turnover. Clemson ends the regular season with 18victories, its high total for a regular season since 1996-97 whenClemson had 21 wins entering the ACC Tournament. The 7 ACC wins isthe most by a Clemson team since the 1997-98 team won seven in theregular season. *Clemson is 16-8 in Senior Night games against ACCteams since 1972, a 66.7 percent winning mark. The Tigers are now8-2 on Senior Day against Georgia Tech. This is the first timeClemson has won its first two games in the month of March since1997-98 when Clemson defeated Georgia Tech on March 1 and WakeForest on March 6 in the first round of the ACC Tournament.*Clemson swept Georgia Tech this year, the first time the Tigershave swept the Yellow Jackets since 1996-97. Clemson has averaged85.6 points per game over its last four games. Clemson has nowscored at least 86 points in three consecutive ACC games, allvictories. This is the first time in Clemson history the Tigershave scored at least 86 points in three consecutive ACC victories.Clemson scored at least 86 points in three consecutive games in1986-87, but one of the games was a loss (108-99 vs. North Carolinaat Clemson). This is the first time Clemson has scored at least 86points in any three consecutive games since the 1992-93 season.Clemson scored 61 points in the second half of today’s game, themost points scored in a half since the Tigers scored 63 in thefirst half against Puerto Rico Mayaquez earlier this season Dec.19, 2005. The 61 points scored in the second half were the mostsecond half points by a Clemson team since the Tigers scored 69 inthe second half against Charleston Southern in Charleston on12-1-93. The 61 points in the second half were the most by a Tigerteam in an ACC game since Clemson scored 66 at Virginia on Jan. 13,1993 in a 100-82 loss. The 61 points in the second half were themost by a Clemson team in any half in Littlejohn Coliseum sinceNovember 30, 1991 when Clemson scored an all-time record 72 pointsin the second half against Morehead State.
