Clemson Upsets #12 Florida State, 5-2, On Sunday

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Third-ranked Ani Mijacika won her 19th singles match of the year and the 42nd ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #12 Florida State, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 5-8 on the year with a 1-2 against ACC opponents, while the Seminoles fell to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Mijacika, a sophomore from Makarska, Croatia, defeated #31 Katie Rybakova at flight one in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) and now boasts a 19-5 overall record.

She was also victorious in doubles play, teaming with Carol Salge to post an 8-2 win over Tapiwa Marobela and Ania Rynarzewksa. Clemson’s tandem of Alexandra Luc and Ina Hadziselimovic fell to Lauren Macfarlnae and Jessica Wente at flight three (8-5) to tie the doubles score at 1-1.

Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem clinched the Tigers’ 11th doubles win of the season with an 8-4 victory over Florida State’s Carolin Walter and Rybakova at the number two position.

Salge, Hadziselimovic and Luc, along with Mijacika, then posted wins in singles play for Clemson’s five points on the day. Luc put the Tigers ahead, 2-0, winning 6-0, 7-5 against Federica Suess at flight six.

The Seminoles’ Walter then defeated Van Adrichem at the third position (6-4, 6-1) before Salge recorded the flight four victory over Wente (6-4, 6-1).

Hadziselimovic put Clemson on top, 4-1, as she defeated Marobela at flight six, 6-2, 6-3. Following Mijacika’s win at the top spot, Balda fell to 74th-ranked Macfarlane in a battle at flight two, 7-6(5), 6-4, to conclude the action.

The Tigers will have a 13-day break before returning to the court against North Carolina and Duke over the Mar. 22-23 weekend.
