Clemson Tops Maryland In Men’s Tennis, 7-0

College Park, Md.–The 59th-ranked Clemson men’s tennis team swept doubles and singles competition and defeated the University of Maryland 7-0 on Saturday. With the win, Clemson improves to 4-16 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. Maryland falls to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in league play. Clemson has faced a nationally ranked opponent in 19 of its 20 matches this season. The Tigers have now won 24 straight matches against Maryland and led the all-time series against the Terrapins 35-13.

In singles play, Clemson won all six matches in straight sets. At the number-one position, the Tigers’ Brad Emendorfer downed Maryland’s Chris Chiu by a score of 6-2, 7-6. The win was Emendorfer’s 14th of the season. That total places him behind only Marko Gojanoivic for most singles wins on the team this season. Darren Knight, Micah Thompson, Jamin Thompson, Damiisa Robinson, and Kevin Gottfried all dominated their matches and also picked up singles wins for Clemson.

The Tigers were equally as dominate in doubles competition. At the number-one position, the Tigers’ Emendorfer and Knight overpowered Maryland’s Jonathan Neeter and Larry Chou 8-1. Jamin Thompson and Eric Cohn won at the number-two position and Robinson and Gottfried cruised to an easy win at the number-three slot.

Clemson will next be in action on Sunday afternoon, April 1st, as the Tigers travel to 14th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth. In a match played earlier this season at the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, AL, VCU defeated the Tigers by a score of 4-0.
