Clemson to Play Georgia in NCAA Round of 16

URBANA, IL – The 13th-seeded Clemson women’s tennis team will meet familiar foe No. 4 Georgia in the Third Round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships on Friday at 1:00 pm eastern at the Khan Tennis Complex in Urbana, IL. Georgia holds a 24-22 all-time edge in the series, which has seen the teams play in 22 consecutive seasons and three of the last four NCAA Tournaments.  In 2010, Clemson eliminated the Bulldogs in the NCAA Second Round in Clemson, SC. Last season, the Bulldogs held on for a 4-3 win over the Tigers in Athens, GA.  Live scoring links are available at ClemsonTigers.com and live video for each court is also available on the tournament home page.  Georgia took down Clemson, 5-2, at the Indoor Center in February to extend their winning streak to four over the Tigers. Of 47 all-time meetings between the programs including Friday, only eight have come at a neutral site, where Clemson has won all previous meetings over the Bulldogs.  Singles matchups in Friday’s battle will be similar with the exception of one match, while all of the doubles lineups will be new. Clemson’s wins came from Beatrice Gumulya on court three and Ani Miao on court five.  Clemson has three players ranked in the top-40 nationally, and each of whom has earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Championships. On the other side of the net, Lauren Herring is ranked 6th in the nation, while Maho Kowase comes in at 19th. Silvia Garcia is the third ranked player for the Bulldogs, and checks in at No. 104 in the nation. In doubles, Garcia and Kate Fuller are ranked No. 1 in the nation.  Clemson will counter with Gumulya and Yana Koroleva on court one doubles. The Clemson duo upset the No. 12 doubles team in the nation from Vanderbilt on Saturday, and is 9-1 on the season overall.  Koroleva, ranked 16th in the nation, brings a 24-7 record to the match and an eight-match winning streak. Liz Jeukeng, ranked 33rd, is 18-5 this season, with one of those coming to Kowase earlier this season. Gumulya is a team-best 25-4 on the year, and has won ten straight matches, including her clincher on Saturday against Vanderbilt.  Georgia will be the 13th match this season Clemson has played against a top-25 team, and its sixth against a top-ten team.  The winner of the Clemson-Georgia match will take on the winner between Stanford and Southern California in the Quarterfinals.
