Clemson to Compete at UNC Wilmington Seahawk Intercollegiate

CLEMSON, S.C. — Fresh off its best performance of the spring, the Clemson men’s golf team returns to the course on Sunday to compete in the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course in Wilmington, N.C. The Tigers will be one of 18 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament held Sunday and Monday, March 26-27.

The field includes ACC teams Clemson and Duke, Big 10 teams Maryland and Nebraska, and Big 12 team TCU.

Clemson finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Linger Longer Invitational at the Great Waters Course in Eatonton, Ga.last Tuesday.  The Tigers shot seven-under-par 281 in the final round to finish with a three-over-par 867 score.

It was the third top four finish for the Tigers this year, as they look to host the NCAA Regional Tournament at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls Course in May.

Four of the players who helped the Tigers to that fourth-place finish at the Linger Longer will be in the lineup at UNC Wilmington. The group includes Kian Rose, who led the Tigers with a 215 score and an eighth-place individual finish, the sophomore’s first top 10 as a Tiger. He has a 72.14 stroke average for the year with a team best 10 under-par rounds.

Andrew  Swanson has the top stroke average on the team at 71.83 and he will be in the lineup this weekend.  The native Bluffton, SC has been first or second among Tigers in each of the last four tournaments and is coming off a one-over-par 217 score and 14th-place finish at UNC Wilmington.

Jonathan Nielsen will play the number-one position in Jordan Byrd’s lineup this weekend.  He had a solid 218 score for the 54 holes at the Linger Longer and finished 18th.    He has eight under-par rounds in his first season with the Tigers.

Freshman Thomas Higgins had a strong final round 69 at the Linger Longer and had 14 birdies for the event, first one the team.  The native of Ireland  has a 73.33 stroke average for the year.  Zack Gordon will be in the lineup for his 40th career tournament as a Tiger.  The native of Gaffney has five career top 10s including medalist honors at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst #2 last year.
